fifteen: Bolsor

B olsor was struggling to fit an extra pair of pistols into his bag when a female voice from behind him said, “Are you really going?”

He turned to find his wife, Loriya, standing in the doorway of their bedroom. She was a tall, thin woman with sandy blonde long hair. Her eyes were slightly red, but other than that, she was her usual well-dressed, proper self.

Fifteen years of marriage, and she still takes my breath away every single time I lay eyes on her.

“I don’t have a choice, my dear,” he replied calmly. “ You know what’s at stake. Someone has to stop the Zuuvreils before they destroy the rest of the galaxy.”

“But why should this someone be the father of my children?” whispered Loriya.

Bolsor could see tears welling up in her eyes. He walked up to his wife and pulled her into a gentle embrace. “Let me put it this way: if I don’t go now, and then in a week, a month, or a year, the Zuuvreils destroy Tilunus and annihilate all our people, you’ll hate me for not going, and yourself for stopping me.”

Loriya put her head on his shoulder. “Sometimes, I think you have a death wish. First you provoke the Xortaags, and now you want to go to battle with an alien fleet that has already destroyed two planets.”

The prince chuckled. “Just recently someone called me a ‘misguided, foolish idealist.’ ”

“They have a point,” said Loriya.

Bolsor tried to pretend he was offended.

“I often worry that your obsession with doing the right thing will one day get you killed,” Loriya continued.

“But not this time.” Bolsor gently held up his wife’s chin and looked lovingly into her eyes. “I promise I’ll come back to you and the kids, safe and sound. The hero that saved the galaxy. The kids will be so proud, and so will you.”

Loriya forced a smile through her tears. “I’m going to hold you to that promise. Do you have time to say goodbye to our sons?”

“Wouldn’t miss it for the world,” said Bolsor with a cheerful smile.

They left the bedroom together, hand in hand.
